CFP: Women and Labor (grad) (12/10/05; 3/4/06)
The (se)X Factor in Labor
We are inviting graduate students to submit papers,
performances and panels/roundtables for our conference that
takes a special look at women who labor. The definition of
labor is broad and can include issues such as domestic labor,
wage labor, sweatshops, sex work, motherhood, slavery to
capitalism, bondage to hegemonic structures and systems,
bondage to ideologies that restrict our freedom, bondage
to/desire for love, sex and relationships and limiting self-
concepts, and more. We invite graduate students to ask
critical questions on these imperative issues, and welcome
both academic and non-academic/artistic submissions. We are
looking at this event as an cross-disciplinary, interactive,
inter-woven space that allows people from diverse fields of
interest to come together and share their work.
This conference is a part of the Mellon Workshop "Of Human
Bondage" which is a year long series of events to be held at
the University of California at Riverside. Mellon Workshops
on various topics are a yearly feature of academic life at
UCR and bring together scholars whose work it is to engage in
intellectual thought and creative scholarship.
The conference is a one day event to be held on Saturday,
March 4, 2006. The deadline for submission of abstracts is
December 10, 2005. Please email your abstracts to Amita
Nijhawan, anijh001_at_ucr.edu. Please also mention if you have
any special needs for technology or space. Abstracts should
be e-mailed in the body of the message rather than as
attachments. Please include a brief biography.
