(Re)Markable Identities: Confronting, Corrupting, and Conflating Cultural
Discourses
PANEL: EXPERIMENTAL THEATRE – CORRUPTING TIME, PLACE, AND AUDIENCE

This panel seeks paper and presentation abstracts (including performance
pieces) that explore the nature of experimental theatre in the 20th century
and how it has challenged audiences to move from passive spectatorship to
active engagement in the philosophy and cultural discourses of the theatre.
Possible topics include, but are not limited to: Artaud's Theatre of
Cruelty, Brecht's Epic Theatre and the Verfrumdungseffekt, Theatre of the
Absurd, post-Thatcher "In-yer-face" theatre of the 1990's, etc.
Presentations may also engage the influence of a particular playwright or
play, such as Tom Stoppard, Caryl Churchill, Sarah Kane, Samuel Beckett,
Tony Kushner, Jose Rivera, William Mastrosimone, Maria Irene Fornes, even if
the individual is not commonly considered "experimental."

Some potential questions may be:
How have these movements, playwrights, productions, etc. changed the
dramatic landscape of the 20th century? How do they engage actors and
audiences through visceral staging and shock tactics? What social philosophy
is at work? Were they successful? Why does it matter?

Paper abstracts should be no more than 350 words and submitted by November
30, 2005. Please include home and office numbers, complete mailing address,
e-mail address, professional affiliation, and AV requirements with your
