The Better-Known Chopin: Making It New

For over fifty years, The Awakening and stories like "Desiree's Baby" and
"The Story of an Hour" have been part of the literary canon and staples of
the classroom. As the times and contexts change, we are finding new
approaches and new perspectives on these familiar works. For this ALA
panel, which is sponsored by The Kate Chopin Society, papers and
presentations should provide some re-visionings of Kate Chopin's
better-known fiction: proposing innovative critical approaches, developing
new textual pairings and readings, examining unexplored contexts, or
suggesting classroom techniques that can make Chopin's work fresh for
contemporary students. Proposals of 100-150 words should be sent to
Barbara Ewell by January 15, 2006 at bewell_at_loyno.edu.

The American Literature Association's 17th annual conference will meet at
the Hyatt Regency San Francisco in Embarcadero Center on May 25-28, 2006
(Thursday through Sunday of Memorial Day weekend). The deadline for
proposals is January 30, 2006. For further information, please consult the
ALA website at www.americanliterature.org or contact the conference
director, Professor Maria Karafilis of California State University, Los
Angeles at mkarafi_at_calstatela.edu with specific questions.
