DEADLINE UPDATE: NOVEMBER 20, 2005

If you miss this deadline, please contact the area chair.

We are considering proposals for sessions organized around a theme, special panels, and/or individual papers. Sessions are scheduled in 1½ hour slots, ideally with four papers or speakers per standard session, although discussion sessions/round-robin panels may be larger.

We welcome any topics pertaining to the body and physical difference, but are especially interested in presentations that include an exploration of the tension between deviant and normalized bodies in their many forms, of the ways in which societies construct their concepts of the normal, and/or of the variety of strategies used by those who attempt to challenge and subvert the parameters of those constructions.

Possible topics:

--Literature and Physical Otherness

--Otherness in Contemporary Culture

--Tattoing

--Weight Issues & Eating Disorders

--Disabilities & Cultural Fear

--Fitting Into Cultural Norms: Height, Weight, Color

--Race & the Body: Standards and Challenges

--Athleticism & Gendered Expectations

--Marginalizing and Physical Contexts: You Can't Be Too ______________

Should you or any of your colleagues be interested in submitting a proposal or have any questions, please contact the area chair (see below).

Submit a one-page (150-250 word) proposal or abstract (via regular mail or e-mail) by November 20, 2005, to:
