Queering the Modern:

Virginia Woolf dates the beginning of Modernism on or about December 1910,
when ghuman character changed.h The transition away from Victorian
standards, which paved the way for the beginning of the modernist movement,
began much earlier in the 1890s. Oscar Wilde has been recognized by literary
scholars as well as the editors of The Norton Anthology of English
Literature for having written a germinal work during this transitional
decade: gThe Importance of Being Earnest.h While Wildefs literary work is
deemed important in terms of the aesthetic shift it represents in the move
towards Modernism, his life has, by some contemporary scholars, been deemed
equally important.

The relationship between Wildefs aesthetic and his personal life motivates
a series of questions regarding the intersections between the literary
transition from the Victorian to the modernist period and a cultural shift
in the public regulation of homosexuality. In keeping with the theme of the
conference: (Re)Markable Identities: Confronting, Corrupting, and Conflating
Cultural Discourses, the goal of this panel is to explore how violations
against Victorian Standards are demonstrated through a rereading of Modern
texts through gay and lesbian studeis and queer theory. Specifically, how
Modern texts challenge dominanat idealogies, examples of textual
trangression and resistance, as well as the breeching of boundaries and
performativity.

Paper Abstracts for twenty minute presentations should be no more than 350
words and submitted by December 15, 2005
