Permeability and Selfhood.
McGill University, Montreal
12th Annual Graduate Conference on Language and Literature
March 11-12, 2006

The English Graduate Students Association at McGill University is soliciting
papers for its upcoming Conference on Language and Literature. The
conference will be held in Montreal, Quebec, Canada on March 11-12, 2006.
Dr. Terry Castle, Walter A. Haas Professor in the Humanities at Stanford
University, will be the plenary speaker. Professor Castle's talk--on Philip
Larkin's "lesbian schoolgirl novels" of the late 1940s-- will deal with the
relationship between the homosexual theme and the evolution of Larkin's
tragicomic (and exemplary) poetic voice. For more information about the
conference, including specific panel topics, please visit the conference
website at http://www.arts.mcgill.ca/programs/english/grad/gradsymp/.

Call for Papers

This conference will address representations of permeability and selfhood in
and through literature. We encourage a wide variety of interpretations on
this theme. Some questions that will be explored are: Is there a
contradiction between selfhood and permeability? In what literary works does
the self stand particularly immune or vulnerable to permeability? How does
the process of writing, specifically autobiography, aid in the development
of the self? In what ways do readers function as permeating forces?

Possible paper topics include:

(Auto)biography and the possibilities of representation

The permeability of colonial spaces and urban centres

Group identity vs. individual identity

Technology/Communication as a permeating force

Alterity and intersubjectivity

Release and regulation

Trauma and the self

Bodily interiors and exteriors

Disease in literature

Phenomenology

Education

Please send paper proposals (300 words) by January 10, 2006 to Lindsay
Holmgren (lindsay.holmgren_at_mail.mcgill.ca) or Tara MacDonald
