CALL FOR PAPERS

University of Washington Graduate Conference for Interdisciplinary Studies
May 4-5, 2006
Submission Deadline: February 10, 2006

*****************************************************
Faith, Knowledge and the Interface of Epistemologies
Speaker: Robert Michel Pyle
*****************************************************

The relationships between knowledge and power, the doctrinal foundations of faith, the empiricism of modern science, the convergence of different knowledge systems and, what and how one knows have been sources of perennial contention. By investigating competing frames of knowledge and their interface, this conference aims to bring to lightâ€"among other issuesâ€"how competing epistemologies generate claims of truth and interact in the context of social negotiation. Given the interdisciplinary platform of this conference, candidates are also encouraged to consider how their work can be situated within a wider academic discourse. With this in mind, the graduate students of the University of Washington welcome papers on “Faith, Knowledge and the Interface of Epistemologies” from all disciplines.

Topics might include but are not limited to:
--Methodology as Ideology
--Systems of Belief
--Knowledge Systems
--Experiment or Experience
--Dogmas
--Human vs. Non-human knowledge
--Relations of Power
--Knowledge in Community
--Technologies of Knowing
--Knowledge and Religion
--Archaeologies and Histories of Knowledge

Papers will be allotted 20 minutes (8-10 pages MLA), and abstracts (250 words) should include full name, paper title, and institutional affiliation.

Submission deadline is February 10th, 2006.

Abstracts should be sent to: uwclit_at_u.washington.edu.
