Call For Papers: Literature Courses with a Travel or Study Abroad
Component.=20

Conference: Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association, October 12-14,
2006, Tucson =20

I seek papers for a proposed special session panel addressing study
abroad courses or courses with a travel component. Courses involving
both international travel and travel within the United States are
welcome. This panel intends to explore methodologies and pedagogical
issues relevant to courses in which place occupies a particularly
prominent position as students visit or inhabit spaces of literary
significance. Both literature courses and interdisciplinary courses
including a literature emphasis are invited.

Although all papers examining such courses are welcome, of particular
interest are papers examining how visits to authors' homes and haunts
supplement classroom study, questions on the nature and value of
authenticity and nostalgia raised through the preservation of such
sites, literary pilgrimages, traditions of travel literature and the
student writer, examining constructions of the tourist and student
perception of self as traveler are invited. =20

Presenters might consider discussing their course design, rationale for
text selection, travel itineraries, and successful assignments.
