song or picture, this engaging personality . . . to me? What effect does it=

really produce on me?" (The Renaissance); "Might the will itself be an orga=
n of=20
knowledge, or vision?" (Marius the Epicurean); "What, then, did Flaubert=20
understand by beauty, in the art he pursued with so much fervour, with so m=
uch=20
self-command?" (Appreciations). =20

What are the questions that readers of Pater should be asking today? What=20
critical and theoretical issues should be exposed to our collective gaze,=20
perhaps long overlooked or overshadowed, but always enfolded in his texts w=
ith=20
