UPDATE: Black British Aesthetics Today: The 2006 Howard University Symposium

(12/21/2005-4/08/2006)

EXTENSION OF THE CALL FOR PAPERS to December 21, 2005.

Papers are invited for an international symposium taking place on the Howard
University campus (Washington, D.C.) and designed to highlight and to
explore an important new area of aesthetic theory and artistic achievement:

contemporary "black" British literature, theatre, and performance arts. The
symposium is designed to facilitate sharing research and critical insights
into the artistic accomplishments and the aesthetics of the latest
generation of British artists and writers of African heritage. The day-long
event will include two key addresses as well as feature several panels of
10-minute papers contextualizing the new "black" British aesthetic(s) and
addressing explicit "black" British aesthetic manifestos, implicit new
"black" British aesthetic movements and artistic strategies, the aesthetics
of particular "black" British artists and writers, and relationships between
new "black" British aesthetic movements and other or earlier ones. Please
send your 300-400 word abstract to R. Victoria Arana at
rvarana_at_archeform.com by December 21, 2005. Past HU symposia have resulted
in published collections of expanded essays; IMPORTANT NOTE: a scholarly
press in the UK has already expressed strong interest.
