Call for Papers: New Directions in Children's Literature
Children's Literature Discussion Circle
South Atlantic Modern Language Association Conference
November 10th - 12th, 2006
Charlotte, NC
Possible topics include, but are not limited to, the following:
* the birth of 'tween culture and the shifting nature of YA literature
* the continued impact of Heather Has Two Mommies, Annie on My Mind and King and King and the increasing depiction of nonheteronormative sexual identities in children's literature
* the influence of new media and the hybridization of children's reading material
* the phenomenal success of J.K. Rowling's Harry Potter series and the growing commercialization of children's literature
* the rise of graphic novels and the transformation of children's pictorial narratives
* the 9/11 terrorist attacks, the recent devastation of the Gulf Coast hurricanes and the changing treatment of trauma, war and natural disaster in children's narratives
* the increasingly multicultural nature of writing about and for young readers
* the ongoing treatment of globalization, white Western imperialism and postcolonialism in children's books
