19th-century theorist Mary Anne Schimmelpenninck has recently drawn
renewed attention from literary critics and biblical scholars alike.
This is largely due to her innovative approach to landscape aesthetics
in Narrative of a Tour to La Grande Chartreuse and Alet (1813) and
Theory on the Classification of Beauty and Deformity (1815), and her
rigorous approach to scriptural interpretation in Biblical Fragments
(1821) and An Essay upon the Psalms and their Spiritual Application
(1825). This panel will re-examine Schimmelpenninck's writing from a
variety of fields - including literary theory and biblical studies - and
thus remain true to her own interdisciplinary oeuvre. The panel could
include papers treating specific members of Schimmelpenninck's immediate
familial and social circle, such as Samuel Galton, Elizabeth Fry, Joseph
Priestly, Anna Barbauld and Hannah More. Papers considering
Schimmelpenninck's writing in light of her broader connections with
early nineteenth-century Quaker, Methodist and Moravian communities are
also encouraged.=20
