A Symposium in Rhetoric: "Milton's Paradise Lost"

We are seeking proposals for papers addressing the scholarship and life of
John Milton, specifically his epic poem, Paradise Lost and its applications
to today's world. In what ways is Paradise Lost beneficial to today's
scholar? What current issues can benefit from the study of PL or Milton? How
could Milton's work be taught to the modern student? Issues could include:

 

Milton's Eve

Marriage as portrayed by Adam and Eve's relationship

Satan as Rhetorician

Hierarchy of angels or demons

The Battle in Heaven

Nature or Natural History as described in the poem

Teaching Milton in the Modern Age

Freedom and Free Will in Paradise Lost

Milton's Politics

Milton's Prose

Milton's Poetics

 

The Rhetoric Symposium broadly describes kairos to incorporate a wide
variety of research interests. The panel is interested in papers that
present an interdisciplinary approach to the research topic.

Proposals should be in abstract form (approximately 250 words); electronic
submissions are preferred.

 

The deadline for submission of all proposals is January 6, 2006.

 

The Keynote speaker will be Dr. Brenda Brueggeman of Ohio State University.
