Women Within and Without Community
Women's Studies Panel

The place of women within (and without) various types of communities has long
been contested and explored in literature, film, psychology, sociology, and
numerous other disciplines. This panel will explore women's roles in the
communities in which they live and how they function within those roles. Such
communities can be diversely defined as those that they construct or imagine
for themselves, those in which they participate, those by which they are
restricted and enabled, those that are defined by the place which women hold
within them, and those from which they are excluded. Papers may also explore
the existence, purposeful or otherwise, of women outside of dominant
communities and how the negotiation of that separation operates in women's
narratives. Proposals on related topics are welcome.
