Women in the Classroom: A Pedagogy Roundtable

This roundtable will address pedagogical issues which arise in teaching undergraduate courses on women writers. Potential participants might consider responding to some of the following questions, or developing their own:

* How can courses on women writers be organized to highlight gender issues without inscribing essentialist attitudes?
* What is the relationship between literature and culture or history on the syllabus and in the classroom?
* Do the personal lives and experiences of our students have a place in the women writers classroom?
* How does a gender imbalance among students affect classroom discussion and pedagogy?
* What creative pedagogical tools can enhance the learning environment of the women writers classroom?

Potential roundtable participation should send the following materials in the body of an email (no attachments) by January 19, 2006 to Laura Tanner at laura.tanner_at_bc.edu:
- A short description (200-300 words) of a proposed presentation designed to stimulate discussion on a specific pedagogical topic, followed by a list of 3 - 4 suggested questions to focus discussion.
- A one page c.v. and a short (3 or 4 sentence) description of a recent women writers course that you have taught.
