Call for Papers for a Proposed Session at the American Studies Association
Annual Meeting 2006 (Oakland CA)

Medicalization and Transnationalism

This panel aims to explore United States medical issues is a transnational
context. With people from other countries coming to the u.s. for health care
and U.S. doctors going abroad through organizations Doctors without Borders,
U.S. medicine has become a larger and larger presence on the global stage.
At the same time, people from the United States are going elsewhere in the
world for their health care because of rising costs and other issues. What
are the implications, positive and negative, of such migratory moves for
medicine, and for various identities?

Possible topics might include:
Border Crossing as part of the medical process
Racial politics and medicine
Class issues and medical practices
Health care policy issues in transnational contexts
Cultural hybridity and medical practices
