CFP: Debut Panel, Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, and Transgender Theatre (ATHE)

The Lesbian, Gay, Bisexual, Transgender Focus Group of the Association
for Theatre in Higher Education (ATHE) invites submissions for its Debut
Panel from scholars who have not yet published articles or presented at
a national conference. The deadline for submissions is February 15, 2006.

In support of ATHE's conference theme of "Theatrical Milestones: Past
Legacies, Present Possibilities, Future Strategies," LGBT's theme for
2006 is "Queering Generations." Our theme explores the possible
genealogies of queer lives, theatre, performance, and scholarship. For
the Debut Panel, all proposals on LGBTQ theatre and performance (whether
or not related to the theme) will receive equal consideration. We
encourage interdisciplinary submissions in which LGBTQ issues are viewed
in conjunction with or through any of various disciplines/approaches
such as history, women's studies, race/ethnicity studies, and
performance studies. Recent debut panel papers include "My Father's
Suit: Toward Historicizing Cross-Gender Masculinity in the Solo Work of
Peggy Shaw," "Inside Brick's Closet: Homosexuality and Cat on a Hot Tin
Roof," and "Performers in the Audience: The Boulton and Park Trial of
1871."

Both graduate students and faculty members are eligible to submit.
Submissions will be evaluated by a jury of theatre scholars who will
select three papers to be presented at the conference. The jury will
consist of Dr. Kim Marra, Associate Professor of Theatre at the
University of Iowa, Dr. Mark Zelinsky, Assistant Professor of English at
Saint Joseph College, and Dr. Stacy Wolf, Associate Professor at the
University of Texas. Professor Marra will act as Respondent during the
session, and Professor Zelinsky will serve as chair.

Selection of papers is competitive. Authors of selected papers will
read them at the 20th annual ATHE conference, which will be held August
3-6, 2006, at the Palmer House Hilton Hotel in Chicago, Illinois. All
presenters must register and pay the appropriate fees for the
conference. Conference presenters should be ATHE members unless they
work outside the academic study of theatre.

Depending on submissions, outstanding papers not chosen for the debut
panel may be selected for presentation at LGBT's pre-conference.
Details of the pre-conference have not been finalized, though it will
probably be held on August 2.

Papers should be an appropriate length for a fifteen minute presentation
(typically about eight pages). Send FOUR copies of your complete paper
and a cover sheet to:
