CFP: Louisiana English Journal/Hurricanes Katrina and Rita (5/15/06; journal issue)
The Louisiana English Journal will be publishing a special issue
commemorating the 2005 hurricanes Katrina and Rita in October 2006. We
are seeking personal stories, poems, before/after pictures, and original
art that relate the experiences of those who were in Louisiana at the
time, whether they were residents, tourists, or students. Those
displaced by the storms are especially encouraged to submit their work.
We also welcome articles or stories from those in or outside of
Louisiana about the effects of these two hurricanes in their communities
and schools, such as the influx of displaced residents and students, and
how they dealt with them.
The Louisiana English Journal is the official journal of the Louisiana
Council of Teachers of English, which is sponsoring a contest for best
submissions. Prizes will be awarded in the following categories:
OVERALL
$30 for Best True Story, Best Poem, Best Before/After Pictures, or Best
Original Art.
GRADES K-5
$20 for Best True Story, Best Poem, or Best Picture/Original Art.
GRADES 6-8
$20 for Best True Story, Best Poem, Best Before/After Pictures, or Best
Original Art.
GRADES 9-12
$20 for Best True Story, Best Poem, Best Before/After Pictures, or Best
Original Art.
COLLEGE/UNIVERSITY STUDENTS
$20 for Best True Story, Best Poem, Best Before/After Pictures, or Best
Original Art.
OTHER ENTRIES
$20 for Best True Story, Best Poem, Best Before/After Pictures, or Best
Original Art.
The deadline to submit stories, articles, and poems is May 15, 2006.
The deadline to submit original art and before/after pictures is June
15, 2006. Please send electronic submissions to
melissagarner318_at_yahoo.com. Manuscripts must be in either MS Word (.doc)
or rich text format (.rtf), and pictures need to be in .jpg format. You
may also mail submissions to:

Please do not mail original art larger than 8.5" x 11". Those who
submit manuscripts by mail should also submit an electronic copy in MS
Word or Rich Text Format on a 3.5" floppy disk.
Submitters must also mail an "Official Entry Form" before the deadline.
