This call for papers is for a proposed panel to be
held at the (dis)junctions conference, the University of California
Riverside's 13th Annual Humanities Graduate Conference on April 7-8,
2006: Lost in Translation.
 
Scholars such as Lisa Lowe ("Immigrant Acts"), Traise Yamamoto ("Masking Selves, Making Subjects", Paul Gilroy ("The Black Atlantic"), and Phillip Brian Harper ("Framing the Margins"), among others, have theorized that the experience of modernism and postmodernism have been anticipated and experienced differently by marginalized subjects (whether marginalized by class, race, gender, or sexuality). This panel seeks to explore some of the ways in which we might read texts by marginalized populations as examples of post/modernity, perhaps works that have not been thought of within these rubrics before and to explore some of the reasons that we might think of these works as post/modern.
 
Some ideas might include (but are not limited to):
The relationship between capitalism and modernism and the marginalized body
The specificity of experience as a marginalized member of society
The difference that geography might make in marginalization
An exploration between "traditional" high modernist/post-modernist writers and the interplay between these writers and marginalized writers
