Medieval Shakespeare in Performance
edited by Martha W. Driver and Sid Ray

We invite essay proposals (250 words) from early modern scholars and
medievalists for a volume on Shakespeare's medievalism as it has been
presented on stage and screen. This volume will discuss performance history
as well as films, TV and staged texts of Shakespeare's plays, specifically
derived from medieval sources or set in the Middle Ages. The essays in this
volume will examine medieval chronicles, the works of important medieval
authors like John Gower, Geoffrey Chaucer and John Lydgate – and
Shakespeare's realization of his medieval sources in the language and drama
of his own day. Comparative readings will shed light on the ways source
texts have been used to create literary and national histories, as well as
to inform their dramatic representation in a variety of modern media.
>
Because of the traditionally strict boundaries between disciplines of
literary studies, Shakespeare has tended to remain separate from his
medieval sources. The volume is envisioned as an introduction to reading
Shakespeare's plays through the lens of the medieval works that inform them
as well as a guide to Shakespeare and medievalism in popular culture.

Please send abstracts to Sid Ray (gray_at_pace.edu) by Feb. 15, 2006.
