With the prevalence of images of women's bodies in various aspects of popular culture as
well as the long history of women's bodies as the ideal objet d'art over centuries of art
movements, artists who wish to image women are forced to negotiate the loaded
signification of the female body. While some artists ignore or deny this history, many artists
face it head-on and actually use the prevalence of women's bodies in society and the history
of art as an impetus for their own art making. Indeed many artists take these stereotypes and
these histories head-on in their work.

This panel is looking for artists whose artwork relates to stereotypes regarding the female
body relating to any aspect of culture and society: religion, the family, popular culture,
medical culture, political culture, art history, media, entertainment, etc. and may include
intersections with race, ethnicity, and queer concerns. International perspectives are very
welcome and encouraged.

Proposals for this panel may include powerpoint slide and/or video display of art work and a
paper presentation which relates the work presented to the panel topic. Please submit a brief
abstract describing the artwork to be presented, as well as how the images/artwork
presented will relate to the panel topic to adspain_at_buffalo.edu or submit an abstract online
at: genderbuffalo.org. Abstracts not to exceed 300 words. Please include text in the body
of the email. NO ATTACHMENTS please.

Deadline for Abstracts: February 15th, 2006
