3520, Chapel Hill NC 27599-3520 THE CONTEMPORARY GAELIC GOTHIC Many
contemporary Irish writers, including Patrick McCabe, Roddy Doyle, John
Banville, Eoin McNamee, and Martin McDonagh, draw on the gothic,
horrific, and gory as material for their works. McCabe has insisted
that B-grade horror is ?so much a part of me that I couldn?t keep it
out even if I wanted to,? and McDonagh has claimed similar influences.
While previous scholars have noticed the rather bloodthirsty nature of
these authors? writings, I would like this panel to investigate how,
exactly, the gothic and horror genres inform these works and why such
genres might offer particularly appropriate vehicles for these authors?
concerns. In this panel, I am interested in papers that engage with any
of the following questions: Why do these authors use horrific material?
What is it designed to accomplish? Is there anything particularly (if
not exclusively) Irish about this practice? Papers that compare
contemporary Irish manifestations of the gothic to other nations? or
periods? use of the genre would also be considered.
