CFP: Ecocriticism and Environmental Justice (3/1/06; RMMLA, 10/12/06-10/14/06)
CALL FOR PAPERS
Special Topics Session in Ecocriticism and Environmental Justice at the
Rocky Mountain MLA, DoubleTree Resort Hotel at Reid Park in Tucson,
Arizona from October 12-14, 2006.
Geographer Joni Seager has suggested that "As progressive
environmentalists, we must learn to be more curious about causality and
about agency. Grass-roots environmental groups have been the most
effective at naming names but perhaps the least effective at exposing
the larger linkages, the structures, and the _culture_ behind the agents
of environmental destruction. Those structures and cultures are not
gender or race neutral." Proposals are sought for 15-20 minute
presentations from scholars working on intersections of literature,
ecocriticism, and social justice that answer how we, as literary
critics, can begin to understand, explain, and counter what Seager calls
our American "culture of destruction."
Submit 300-word abstracts with title and brief c.v. (all in the text of
the email, please) to Charles Waugh at cwaugh_at_cc.usu.edu by March 1, 2006.
