"We Wear the Mask": Paul Laurence Dunbar and the Representation of Black
Identity

Papers are solicited for a collection of essays tentatively titled: 'We Wear
the Mask': Paul Laurence Dunbar and the Representation of Black Identity.
This collection will examine the many ways in which Dunbar created a
dialogue with the distinct voices he utilized in his works to represent
Black identity. Papers in this collection should challenge the assessments
of Dunbar's works and connect literary and rhetorical strategies that give
authority to his diverse literary techniques. For example, how did Dunbar
influence other writers such as James Weldon Johnson? What techniques did
Dunbar utilize to appeal to his larger White audiences?

Possible topics for this collection may include: the configurations of
dialect and/or standard English in Dunbar's works, invisibility and
selfhood, the Black Press, narrative structure, rhetoric, oral traditions,
humor, aesthetics, novels, short stories, memory, folklore, Black
sermonizing tradition, and music/musicals.

Deadline for 250-300 Word Proposals: June 30, 2006.

Deadline for Completed Manuscripts: Complete manuscripts (15-25 pp. in
length—including references—MLA Style) in MS Word, a one-page CV, and a
brief biographical statement are due by December 31, 2006.
