Call for Paper Details

The goal of the conference is to provide a forum in which Christian
scholars can address meaningful ways to engage culture and through which
participants can come to understand popular culture and situate
themselves in an informed position appropriate to a Christian world
view. Conference topics will particularly explore connections between
popular culture and the life of the mind in the contemporary marketplace
of ideas.=20

Papers, panels or workshop sessions of 30-45 minutes are invited on the
following topics. Of particular interest are sessions which focus on
either film or print media of the Chronicles of Narnia, the Lord of the
Rings, Harry Potter, or His Dark Materials. Papers treating graphic
novels, television, music, or other media, especially those related to
fantasy, are also welcome.

* Biblical perspectives or spiritual truths in works of fantasy=20

* Using aspects of culture, particularly fantasy literature, as
a springboard into spiritual or evangelistic discussion=20

* The appeal of fantasy in popular culture=20

* Connections between myth, fantasy, popular culture and
biblical truth=20

* Using discernment in relation to works of fantasy=20

* Issues of censorship and teaching fantasy in the classroom

* Discerning the appropriate Christian response to culture

* Creative presentations-poetry readings, drama, etc.

Papers in progress are welcome.

Specifications

The tentative conference schedule will begin with a plenary session
followed by two 45 minute break-out sessions, lunch, a third break-out
session, and a closing plenary session.

Presentations should last approximately 30-35 minutes and allow
approximately 10-15 minutes for questions and discussion. Interactive
workshop sessions may last the entire 45 minutes.

Presenters should be prepared to provide all handouts and materials
necessary for their session. Some papers may be solicited for possible
publication.

Proposals for the conference can be submitted using the form located on
the conference Web site (http://www.calbaptist.edu/narnia), via the
conference e-mail address (narnia_at_calbaptist.edu), or by regular post.

This call for papers will close February 17. Papers will be reviewed by
February 24, and presenters will be notified no later than February 27.

Proposals should include

* a descriptive title

* a 300-500 word abstract of the session=20

* a 50-100 word biography of the presenter(s)=20

* a 50-75 word description of the session for the conference
