Extensions, an annual journal published through the
University of California, Los Angeles on the topics of
embodiment and technology, seeks submissions for its
forthcoming volume. This volume of the journal will
be titled: "Interactivity and Kinesthetic Sense"

We seek works that focus on the roles of bodily
movement and kinesthetic sense in the notion of
interactivity. Historically, how has interactivity
been an embodied function in relationship to a
particular type of medium and/or interpersonal
interface? Has this notion become more pronounced
with the advent of digital media? Does the body's
reduction to the simplified movement of the hand
moving a computer mouse constitute an embodied and
interactive experience? What does constitute a
kinesthetic experience in the digital age? Does the
notion of interactivity, as Marsha Kinder argues,
"function as a normative term--either fetishized as
the ultimate pleasure or demonized as a deceptive
fiction"?

Beginning this year, the journal is being hosted by
UCLA's new Center for Performance Studies
(www.performancestudies.ucla.edu), an
interdisciplinary collaboration among faculty and
graduate students who use performance as an organizing
lens into the study of culture, technology, and the
body (to name a few). With this move, we are
broadening our scope to include works that focus on
either the body or technology (rather than requiring
works that involve both). This new focus will allow
for a variety of scholars and artist to contribute to
the discussion of the journal's topic, offering a rich
and interdisciplinary conversation.

The journal welcomes submissions from artists and
scholars working in these areas of study. We
encourage the submission of scholarly essays,
interviews, media/web-based art works, and
documentation of dance, visual, sound, and performance
art. The deadline for submissions is April 1, 2006,
yet we are always accepting submissions for future
volumes. (See timeline below)

For consideration, please submit your work with a
short biography (50 words) in electronic form by
e-mail. All articles should follow MLA style and
should be attached as MS Word documents or PDF files.
For artistic submissions, if your work is accepted,
the journal requires either a hard copy of your work
or high-resolution files uploaded to the Internet.
Works of art should also be accompanied by a short
write-up by the artist that elucidates, expands or
reflects on a conceptual or technological aspect of
the work.
