Research Training Study Day: Memory, Illness and the Body

Venue: Institute of Romance and Germanic Studies, University of London

Date: Friday, 12 May 2006

Papers are invited from UK-registered research students in modern
languages and related fields for a research training study day on
'Memory, Illness and the Body.' =20

The day will open with a screening of the award-winning documentary
'Unknown White Male.' The true story of a British man in New York who
suffers from retrograde amnesia, 'Unknown White Male' has excited
critical attention in the US and will be released in cinemas in Britain
on 7 May. Following the screening, one or more members of the
production team will lead a discussion about the film.

In the afternoon, selected research students will present 20-minute
papers on papers relating to the study day's theme. We expect to accept
approximately six papers in total. There is no fee for participation.

On Saturday, 13 May, following the study day, there will be a related
research seminar including papers by Professor Naomi Segal (IGRS) on
hysteria and Dr Caroline Bainbridge (Roehampton) on trauma, bodies, and
masculinity. All students attending the study day are invited to
participate in the seminar.

Interested students should submit proposals of no more than 500 words by
email to Katia Pizzi, by 17 March.
