Call for Papers--SAMLA special session: The Geography of Film Noir: Space,
Place, City, Country

The themes of film noir are heavily influenced by geographical elements and
physical features of space. The claustrophobia of urban spaces in noir have
enjoyed wide critical consideration, but other geographical elements of film
noir bear discussion, including suburban and rural noir environments,
elements of the “foreign” in noir, films noir that have settings in countries
outside the U.S., and issues of “American-ness” in film noir. Papers that
deal with any of these, as well as other elements of geography and physical
space in film noir are welcomed. Please send 250-word abstracts to

Deadline is April 8, 2006.

Presenters must be current members of SAMLA by 1 May 2006. The SAMLA meeting
