Caryl Phillips: Coming of Age in America
Caryl Phillips has typically been regarded as a writer most interested in Caribbean or British concerns, even though two of his novels—Higher Ground and Crossing the River—include section involving American characters. But with the 2005 publication of Dancing in the Dark, Phillips has brought his interest in the complexities of race, migration, identity, gender and dislocation to an exclusively American story. To provide a foundation for the attention generated by Dancing in the Dark and to highlight Phillips' significance as a transnational writer, this panel will give an overview of his works and examine his narrative techniques and diasporic concerns. Papers on any of Phillips' fiction and/or non-fiction are welcome. Send abstract and c.v. to Ren*e Schatteman (schatteman_at_gsu.edu) by March 20th.
