CFP: The Everyday Use of Religious Media (3/20/06; American Folklore Society, 10/18/06-10/22/06)
The Everyday Use of Religious Media (3/20/06; American Folklore Society
Meetings, 10/18/06-10/22/06, Milwaukee, WI)
Scholars of religion and folklore such as William A. Wilson, David
Hufford, Elaine Lawless, and Leonard Norman Primiano have argued for
attention being paid to religious insider's knowledge, experiences,
and practices. Building on such (related but diverse) calls for
intellectual inquiry, this panel proposes to explore how religious
insiders make meaning from media representations of their own faith
traditions. For example, what are Catholic responses to The Passion of
the Christ, Hindu responses to Arundhati Roy's The God of Small
Things, or Evangelical responses to the Left Behind series? Many other
possibilities exist.
These aspects of vernacular religion may focus on any religious
tradition as well as a variety of media (film, literature, blogs and
discussion groups, etc.) Papers should focus on how religious insiders
use media representations in everyday life.
