Women Prophets, Revolutionary Politics

RSA 2007, March 22-24
Miami, FL In the middle decades of the seventeenth century, the
emergence of myriad radical sects created a space in which some women
were possessed of the ability to preach, to prophecy, to engage in
political and religious debates, to write, and to publish. As the
personal, religious, and political converged, and as public and private
were inverted or blurred, these radical women made waves in interregnum
England. As vessels filled with divine inspiration, women prophets?
apparent relinquishing of selfhood paradoxically allowed them to utter
statements which were overtly political and often subversive. This
panel seeks papers which explore the ways in which revolutionary
politics shaped and were shaped by the lives and works of women
prophets. A variety of theoretical approaches are welcome. Please
send inquiries and abstracts for 15 minute papers, along with any A/V
requirements to Molly Hand at mmm02m_at_garnet.acns.fsu.edu by May 10,
2006. Abstracts may be submitted as Word attachments, otherwise they
should be in the body of the e-mail.
