Richard Hofstadter, David Brion Davis, and others have famously noted a
current of countersubversive thinking and anti-intellectualism running
through American political life from the founding up through the Cold
War. How has twentieth- and twenty-first-century literature formulated
aesthetic responses to the "Paranoid Style" and other forms of paranoia?
What connections exist between paranoia, politics, and literary
