AREA: The New Deal

The New Deal refers to efforts by the FDR
administration to confront the Great Depression of the
1930s, but also to other efforts across the political
spectrum. The New Deal fostered a fresh approach to
documentary filmmaking in order to communicate with
the public the New Deal programs and to address many
of the social and economic issues of the crucial
decade. Under teh guidance of Pare Lorentz,
documentaries helped to develop an appreciation for
the visual aesthetics of film-- art for society and
art to serve the people. We are inviting submissions
on all aspects of the New Deal filmmaking, to include
anything with a humanitarian, reformist, or
revolutionary message made during the difficult years
of the 1930s, with an emphasis on documentary,
docudrama, pseudo-documentary projects, and problem
films.

The Film & History League conference details can be
found at www.filmandhistory.org. The conference runs
November 8-12, 2006, in the Dolce Conference Center,
Dallas, Texas, near the DFW airport.

Proposals, not exceeding 500 words, along with a brief
biographical note should be sent by 25 July 2006 to:
