Seminar: The Politics of Waste

Abstract Deadline: 31 March 2006 (400 words)

Our seminar will examine the role that =93waste=94 plays in postmodern, =
multicultural and capitalist societies in the West. Its aim is to think =
through what is at stake when classes of people, human or non-human =
forms, material substances and ideas are expelled from a system. To =
begin to address what motivates and regulates the politics underpinning =
these systemic exclusions, and in an attempt to explore a =
counter-politics and an ethics of waste, we are proposing to look into =
the following: waste, environmentalism and consumerism; waste understood =
in terms of social class (the =93unproductive=94 in a culture of global =
capital), gender (e.g. women in the white-flesh slave trade) and race =
(e.g. =93white trash=94); trafficking of refugees and immigrants (as the =
waste of the West); bare life as the waste-product of contemporary =
Western societies (discussed in Agamben and Baudrillard); terrorism and =
suicide bombing as wast-ing the only resources one has; corporeality and =
waste (as in food, excrement, vomit etc); contemporary body art =
performances as ritualized abjections of the flesh; =93dirt=94 as =
material and ideological waste; =93noise=94 as sonic waste.=20

Please, email 400-word abstracts to the seminar convenors by 31 March =
2006.
