CFP: Contemporary British and Irish Literary Landscapes: Re-Reading Pat Barker

Call for papers for a one-day conference at University of Hertfordshire,
England

Friday 24th November, 2006

This one-day conference is the first of a series entitled Contemporary
British and Irish Literary Landscapes. The inaugural conference explores
the work of Pat Barker.

Barker is one of Britain's foremost contemporary novelists and one of the
most original and inventive writers of the postmodern era. Her first book,
Union Street (1982), received the Fawcett Society Book Prize and in 1983
she was named as one of the 20 'Best Young British Novelists' by Granta.
Her second novel, Blow Your House Down (1984), was followed by The
Century's Daughter (1986) (re-published as Liza's England in 1996) and The
Man Who Wasn't There (1989). Barker is perhaps best known for her
award-winning First World War trilogy, Regeneration (1991), The Eye in the
Door (1993), which won the Guardian Fiction Prize, and The Ghost Road
(1995), which won the Booker Prize. These were followed by Another World
(1998), Border Crossing (2001), and Double Vision (2003).

Papers (duration 20 minutes) are sought on any aspect of Barker's work, but
