(Another) Slapstick Symposium

A film conference on American slapstick comedy in the silent era, 13th-14th
May, 2006 organized by BLASA (Belgium Luxembourg American Studies
Association), the University of Antwerp (American Studies Group) and VDFC
(Flemish Council for Film Culture)

To be held at the Cinematheque Royale, Brussels, Belgium

(Another) Slapstick Symposium sets out to revisit and rethink some of the
themes and ideas of the original Slapstick Symposium organized by Eileen
Bowser at the Museum of Modern Art in 1985. The conference will focus on
four broad contexts:

1) slapstick comedy and early film style
2) studios and audiences
3) comedy stars/acting
4) mechanics of the gag and the culture of modernity

Confirmed topics include:
"The Art of Imitation: The Originality of Charlie Chaplin and other
Moving-Image Myths", "Back to the 'slap': the slapstick hyperbolic gesture
and the rhetoric of violence", "Sennett Bathing Beauties", "D.W. Griffith
sets the Style for Slapstick", "California Slapstick Revisited".

Confirmed keynote speakers are:
Jennifer Bean (University of Washington, Seattle), Eileen Bowser (Curator of
Film at the Museum of Modern Art in New York to 1993), Tom Gunning
(University of Chicago), Barry Salt (London Film School), Charles Wolfe (UC
Santa Barbara).

Cambridge Scholars Press has expressed strong interest in publishing the
proceedings of the conference.

Abstracts for presentations (of no more than thirty minutes) should be
submitted by email to Tom Paulus at tompaulus_at_telenet.be

New deadline for submissions: 10 April 2006.
