CFP: The Bloomsbury Group: Materials and Materialism (4/20/06; MMLA, 11/9/06-11/12/06)
CALL FOR PAPERS
Proposed Panel: "The Bloomsbury Group: Materials and Materialism"
48th Annual M/MLA Conference in Chicago, November 9-12, 2006.
In light of the MMLA Conference theme of "High and Low / Culture," this session
seeks papers exploring the ways in which the Bloomsbury Group affected and was
affected by the cultural materialism of early twentieth century Britain.
Papers might address either the immediate material concerns of writers and
artists (as in Woolf's "A Room of One's Own," for example) or the changing
materialist landscape of the period in terms of technology, transportation,
imperialism, etc. Possible topics might include, but are not limited to, the
intersections of these material/materialist concerns with issues of femininity
and masculinity; sexuality; cosmopolitanism and provincialism; wealth, poverty,
and class structure; or responses to Victorianism. Papers dealing with any
member/aspect/theme of the Bloomsbury group, as well as papers that take an
interdisciplinary approach, are welcome.
