Theorizing Beyond High/Low

This panel is part of the Midwest Modern Language Association annual =
conference to be held in Chicago Nov. 9-11, 2006.=20

The Cultural Turn in literary studied was to a large degree =
predicated on various critiques of high or elite culture (Frankfurt, =
Birmingham, poststructural) that led to subsequent critical attention to =
mass or popular culture. Ever since, both the concepts as well as the =
phenomena of "high" and "low" or "mass" culture continue to be in play. =

This panel seeks papers which address the ways in which high/low culture =
has been theorized and the critical possibilities those critiques have =
occasioned, as well as the problems that have ensued from critical =
constructions of "high/low" and its obliteration. What critical =
possibilities have been made available by various critiques of high =
culture? What alternative versions of "culture" have become =
institutionalized? Has the analysis of low or popular culture devolved =
back into a high culture pursuit? What critical paradigms come after =
the obliteration of the high/low culture distinction? =20

The panel is eager for submission from a range of scholars, including =
members new to the profession.=20
