CFP: Zizek! The 2007 CCCC Panel (5/1/06)
Conference on College Composition and Communication: Representing Identities
New York, NY 3/21/07-3/24/07

Panel Title: "Welcome to the Desert of Composition Studies:
Contemporary Theory and Disciplinary Identity"

With the publication of The Sublime Object of Ideology in 1989,
Slovenian philosopher Slavoj Zizek announced his presence in English
studies' contemporary theoretical debates. Since then, Zizek has
become one of the most important thinkers of our time. From his
prolific philosophies of identity—including his recent magnum opus,
The Parallax View—to his position on the editorial board at JAC,
Zizek's influence on the fields of rhetoric and composition theory
cannot be ignored.

We are looking for individuals who are interested in participating in
a 2007 CCCC panel that investigates the consequences Zizek's theories
of identity have on rhetoric and composition studies. Specifically,
the panel—tentatively entitled "Welcome to the Desert of Composition
Studies: Contemporary Theory and Disciplinary Identity"—will look to
interrogate the blurring of disciplinary identity in the context of
theories of composing and the teaching of composition from a
"Zizekian" standpoint.

The CCCC Annual Convention will be held in New York City, March 21-24, 2007.

Those interested should submit an abstract of no more than 200 words
via email to Michael Vastola at mvastola_at_ufl.edu. The deadline for
submissions is May 1, 2006.

Sincerely,

Michael Vastola and J.A. Rice
