Luci Tapahonso: Land, Memory, and the Power of Words in Contemporary
Diné (Navajo) Poetry.
October 12-14, 2006
Rocky Mountain Modern Language Association 60th Annual Convention,
DoubleTree Resort Hotel at Reid Park in Tucson, Arizona.

Grounded in traditional Navajo oral tradition and storytelling, the
poetry and prose of Luci Tapahonso celebrates the complex
interrelationships between words, memory and the vast and beautiful
landscape of the American Southwest. Through her work published in One
More Shiprock Night (1981), Seasonal Woman (1982), A Breeze Swept
Through (1987), Sáanii Dahataal: The Women are Singing (1993) and Blue
Horses Rush In (1997) she has sought bridged the gap between
traditional Diné oral tradition and modern poetic form and bring
attention to matters central to Native history and culture. In March
of 2006 Luci Tapahonso was awarded a Lifetime Achievement Award winner
by the Native Writer's Circle of the Americas.

For this panel we are seeking proposals on any aspect of Tapahonso's
work. In addition to this session there will also be a companion
session which will feature a poetry reading by Luci Tapahonso. Please
send abstracts of 250 words via email by Microsoft Word attachment, or
pasted into the body of the email, along with your name, educational
affiliation, address, phone # and email address to:
