Call for Papers and Sessions

Area CFP: Direct Cinema

No conference on the documentary tradition would be complete without
a panel about the Direct Cinema movement. Only recently acknowledged
as specific to the United States instead of an offshoot of the French
Cinema Verite movement, Direct Cinema helped define new ways of
thinking about documentary that inspired filmmakers (such as D.A.
Pennebaker, one of the conference featured artists) as well as
resistance to Direct Cinema claims about being able to capture
reality. This call for papers seeks submissions of work from a wide
range of orientations that explore the exciting moment in the history
of documentary film that produced the Direct Cinema movement - its
filmmakers, technologies, theories, and resistances.

Possible topics for consideration include, but are not limited to:
1. Direct Cinema versus Cinema Verite
2. Robert Drew Associates
3. Particular filmmakers (Robert Drew, Richard Leacock, Albert and
David Maysles, D.A. Pennebaker, Barbara Kopple, etc.)
4. In-depth analysis of particular films (Primary, Gimme Shelter,
Dont Look Back, Harlan County, etc.)
5. The effect of technology on Direct Cinema style
6. Direct Cinema claims about truth and reality

The Film & History League will be holding its biannual conference on
"The Documentary Tradition" during November 8-12, 2006, near Dallas,
TX. Full details on the location, featured speakers, registration
procedures, and additional area topics can be found on the web site

Proposals for either individual papers or complete panels (3-4
papers) are welcomed, and submissions may be made in either
electronic or hard copy format. Please send panel proposals and/or
300-word paper abstracts no later than July 30, 2006, to:
