Call for Papers

2006 Film and History League Conference
"The Documentary Tradition" Dallas 8-12 November, 2006
www.filmandhistory.org

AREA: Auteur Documentary Dabblers: Documentary Moments in the Films of
Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, Spike Lee, and Others

Auteur filmmakers like Martin Scorsese, Woody Allen, Spike Lee, and
others have worked extensively in both fictional and documentary films.
However, most of the critical attention devoted to such filmmakers
has focused almost entirely on their fictional works. What are the
larger implications of this critical blind spot?

What is the relationship between the non-fiction films of these auteurs
and their fiction films? And what role do these non-fiction films play
in the authorial signatures of these auteurs?

How do these auteurs incorporate documentary aesthetics into their
fiction features?

How does the issue of authenticity work to establish the reputations of
these auteurs in both fiction and non-fiction film?

What role do these films play in the promotion of these auteurs?

What exhibition venues and support mechanisms (for example, websites)
do these filmmakers favor when it comes to their documentaries versus
their fiction features?

Do these auteurs make and use documentaries in ways that distinguish
their work from that of other mainstream and documentary filmmakers?

How do the ethical imperatives and questions that surface for
mainstream documentary filmmakers play out for auteur filmmakers?

In addition to these larger issues or in conjunction with them, topics
may include:
Producing vs. Directing Documentary Films and Series
Race and Ethnicity in Auteur Documentaries
Gender, Race, Class, and Sexual Identities
Comparative Studies of Auteurs' and Their Documentaries

Submissions on all aspects of non-fiction films made by Hollywood and
independent auteurs are welcome. Deadline for submission is July 25,
2006.
