Call for Papers

2006 Film and History League Conference
"The Documentary Tradition"
www.filmandhistory.org

AREA: Crime Documentary

Filmed representations of crime and forensic pursuit have become a staple of
fictionalized television programs of late (e.g. the "Law & Order" and "CSI"
franchises). Yet even these shows are premised upon real-world events,
sometimes to ill effect (see, for instance, "Law & Order" and the first
Andrea Yates trial). Moreover, several films and television shows have
centered on criminal acts occurring in the real world, either presenting
evidence to solicit the audience's help in the investigation or reenacting
the entirety of the crime and subsequent official investigation. As the
crime documentary becomes codified, particular narrative patterns and visual
techniques are beginning to emerge. This area seeks papers on the crime
documentary that address all aspects of the genre; some critical approaches
include, but are not limited to: technical/formal analysis, cultural
studies, reception studies, narratology. Deadline for submission is July 25,
2006.

The Film and History League conference details can be found at
www.filmandhistory.org. The meeting will run from 8-12 November, 2006 in
the Dolce Conference Center near the DFW airport. A spectrum of other areas
will evolve on the web site over time.

Email submissions (500 words) are preferred. Send all inquires and proposals
