FANTASTIC GENRES II: SCIENCE FICTION, FANTASY, HORROR, AND CHILDREN'S
LITERATURES

Following the success of the first Fantastic Genres conference in 2004, the
second conference once again looks to bring together writers, editors, and
scholars in dialogue about science fiction, fantasy, horror, and children's
literatures. The conference's keynote writer will be John Crowley, whose
LITTLE, BIG (1981) is a classic of modern fantasy and whose most recent novel,
LORD BYRON'S NOVEL: THE EVENING LAND (2005), has received considerable
acclaim. Keynote critic Joan Gordon is reviews editor for SCIENCE FICTION
STUDIES; co-editor of the anthologies BLOOD READ: THE VAMPIRE AS METAPHOR IN
CONTEMPORARY CULTURE (1997) and EDGING INTO THE FUTURE: SCIENCE FICTION AND
CONTEMPORARY CULTURAL TRANSFORMATION (2002); and author of a study of Gene
Wolfe and numerous articles. Crowley and Gordon represent the range of
possibilites the Fantastic Genres offer writers and critics, and papers on any
aspect of either's work are welcome. Papers and panel proposals on any aspect
of the Fantastic Genres are also welcome; the conference organizers are
especially interested in presentations that address the work of such
understudied writers as James Tiptree, Jr. and Gene Wolfe.
