Call for Papers: Comparative Approaches to Indigenous Literary Studies

University of Auckland, (NZ) Saturday August 5, 2006.

Closing date for expressions of interest: July 5, 2006=20

The Centre for Cultural Inquiry and the English Department of the
University of Auckland are hosting a one-day symposium on comparative
approaches to indigenous literary and cultural studies. This is the
first time that such a symposium has been offered at the University of
Auckland and we invite you to join us in our discussions and to actively
participate with us in our workshops. There is no registration fee.

The event is being organized by Witi Ihimaera, Alex Calder, Selina Marsh
and Ann Pistacchi. Invited speakers currently include Chadwick Allen
(Ohio State, USA), Anita Heiss (Macquarie, Australia), Chris Healy
(Melbourne, Australia) and Alice Te Punga Somerville (Victoria, New
Zealand).=20

The day's activities will concentrate on the theoretical and practical
problems that arise when indigenous literatures and other art forms are
compared with each other, and when the reader or viewer is removed from
the indigenous text's cultural and political circumstances of
production.=20

It has manifestly been possible to read diverse indigenous works in the
light of the interests of a colonizing power or a monocultural
institution. But how else might indigenous literatures be read alongside
each other? Is it possible, for example, to read writing by Maori with
reference to Native American traditions, and vice versa? How does one
compare 'pre-renaissance' indigenous writing with texts produced in and
after decolonization? How are indigenous and other modes of
identification distinguished and compared? What other issues arise in
the wake of a comparative turn in indigenous studies?=20

To ensure effective discussion and lively workshop involvement the
numbers of participants will be restricted. For those interested in
offering a paper, we have reserved a limited number of slots for
20-minute presentations. Please advise if your funding requires you to
deliver a formal presentation. Your early registration will be necessary
for you to secure a place with us during the symposium.=20

Please send offers of papers (with abstract) or expressions of interest
to: apis001_at_ec.auckland.ac.nz

We hope to publish work presented in and arising from the symposium as a
special issue of The Journal of NZ Literature.
