'evolutions': a two-day international conference hosted by the School
of Literatures, Languages and Cultures at the University of Edinburgh,
22-23 September 2006

CFP Panel: Unfolding Selves: Evolution and the Rites of Passage

From the birth of a child to the death of a parent, entering university
to finishing schooling, childhood to adulthood through a myriad of
milestones, life is full of markers of change.

    * What can be said about losing one's virginity, shaving for the
first time, or the onset of menstruation?
    * What is the significance of confirmation or circumcision?
    * What greater privileges come in the gaining of a driver's licence
or the right to vote?

This panel will consider these rites of passage, ritualized actions of
movement, crossing over to approach an other. We encourage proposals
from all disciplines, be they historic explorations of visual
depictions, considerations of Bildungsroman, readings of travel
narratives, anthropological approaches, or studies of other thresholds
of becoming, the unfolding and expanding liminal moments of Rites of
Passage.

Applicants who are interested in submitting a paper for this panel
should send a title and abstract of no more than 300 words accompanied
by a short CV to <evolutions.conference_at_ed.ac.uk>, specifying the
panel in the message body. The deadline for submission is 15 July, and
speakers whose proposals have been accepted will be notified shortly
after that. Papers delivered at the conference are expected to be
approximately 20 minutes long. Selected papers from the conference will
be collected and published in a special issue of Forum, Postgraduate
Journal of Culture and the Arts, University of Edinburgh.
