International Interdisciplinary Conference

Literature, Culture, and Tolerance
(Lodz, 28 â€" 30th of May, 2007)

Tolerance is a cultural value often associated with such
phenomena as humanism, pacifism or acceptance of human
variety and diversity. Such an association has, undoubtedly,
historical and geographical determinations but, according to
some contemporary thinkers, this particular relationship
between toleration and other values might have essential,
evolutionary dimension. Is there any decisive correlation
between literature as a medium of culture and toleration? We
would like to discuss many other questions with a
multidisciplinary group of scholars of literature, culture,
and philosophy. We are particularly enthusiastic about
issues such as:
- historical representations of tolerance and intolerance
in culture and literature;
- literature and culture as a crucial test for authenticity
of values;
- literary and quasi-literary justification of tolerance
and/or fanaticism;
- a role of literary and quasi-literary conventions (genres)
in shaping culture of tolerance (e. g. satire, caricature etc.)
- relationship between tolerance and freedom of satire and
raillery;
- relationship between tolerance and liberty; tolerance
and individualism, tolerance and politeness; tolerance and
culture; tolerance and dissidents in religion and society.

This list is a proposal and is not exhaustive.

A book of papers from the conference will be in Polish (all
English contribution will be translated)
Deadlines: 31st of October 2006 â€" declaration of
interest in the conference
31st of January 2007 deadline for submitting a brief
information on the content of a 20-min. presentations (the
registration form reaches the organisers)
             10th of February 2007 â€" confirmation of
acceptance of
proposals
31st of March 2007 â€" deadline for submitting abstracts of 20
minutes presentations (in English, up to 500 words)
