"Is this the end of Tony Soprano?: Exploring the on-going cultural
impact of HBO's The Sopranos in the 21st century"

Just when cultural scholars and Italian Americans thought that interest
in the Mafia was out in the late 20th century, The Sopranos keeps
pulling us back in! Since its debut in 1999, David Chase's The Sopranos
continues to be a powerful force in American popular culture. The sixth
and final season of the series began in March 2006 with 13 episodes and
will conclude in 2007 with an extra 8 episodes starting in January 2007.
By the time of the 2007 NEMLA convention in Baltimore, the series will
be nearing its final episodes, but its cultural impact will continue
through DVD sales and rentals, series syndication, and reruns on HBO.
This panel seeks papers that explore how the series continues to
resonate in American and Italian American culture in the 21st century.
Papers may analyze specific elements represented in the series (ethnic
identity, waste, gender, sexuality, food, space ,class, etc.) or examine
cultural productions that the series has spawned (cookbooks, scholarly
works, other films or tv series). Of particular interest are papers that
focus on specific issues represented in the 6th and final season of The
Sopranos. Please submit 250 word abstracts to Paul Galante at
pag2_at_lehigh.edu .

Interested participants may submit abstracts to more than one NEMLA
panel; however panelists can only present one paper. Convention
participants may present at a paper session panel and also present at a
creative session or participate in a roundtable.
