Improvisation is integral to arts practice. This conference provides a
structure and a space for artists/practitioners/teachers/scholars to
share ideas and debate about the application and relevance of
improvisation in arts practice today.
The vision for Improvisation Continuums: theorising improvisation across
disciplines is to facilitate dialogue and explore contemporary
expressions of improvisation within and across art forms: dance, jazz
and popular music, theatre, live performance art, sound, spoken word,
radio, visual art, film and performative digital media.
We aim to host this trans-disciplinary and multi-disciplinary event in
the playful spirit of 'yes and', to meet in the moment and celebrate
what emerges. Some starting offers:
1. Articulate and document the theory that currently informs your
practice and application of improvisation in:
* Composition
* Devising
* Making work
* Rehearsal
* Text interpretation
* Development
* Live film editing
* Performance
* Actor, Dance, and Performance Training
* Other Teaching & Coaching
2. Address specific elements to do with:
* structure and form;
* interactivity between the traditional/indigenous and the
innovative;
* practice and performance context and/or content;
* the 'who' it is that is improvising - the ensemble; the soloist;
the duet; the chorus.
3. Interrogate your passion - it may be linked to a specific form: free
play, viewpoints, long form improvisation, contact impro, action
theatre, playback theatre, theatresports, you fill in the rest.
4. You could question how you speak and write about improvisation; the
languages you use - being in-the-moment; liveness; embodied; play,
yes... and; being on the edge; finding surprises; bypassing the critic;
stepping outside the box; call and response; not holding back ...
Submissions that tackle transdisciplinarity are encouraged. Papers will
be considered on related themes. While the actual structure of the
conference will emerge in response to expressed areas of interest by
presenters there is scope for performances, practice as research, and
some workshop-style sessions, however early preference will be given to
expressions of interest that addresses the call for academic papers in
which theory is developed.
300 word abstracts should be submitted by Friday 1 September 2006 to
