Literature, Theory and Criticism: the Critical Writings of 20th and 21st Ce=
ntury Writers

The SEAC (Soci=C3=A9t=C3=A9 d' Etudes Anglaises Contemporaines) usually foc=
uses on twentieth and twenty-first century British literature (poetry, dram=
a, short stories and novels). For the 2006 Autumn Conference, the focus wil=
l be slightly displaced. Rather than being on the Modernist or contemporary=
British writers' fictional production, it will be on their theoretical and=
critical writings. The essays, reviews, prefaces of F.M. Ford, J. Conrad, =
E.M. Forster, T.S. Eliot, V. Woolf, D.H. Lawrence, P. Larkin, A.S. Byatt, P=
. Ackroyd, C. Churchill, J. Winterson, S. Rushdie, H. Barker, etc. will be =
examined. The aim of the conference will be to read these non-fictional wri=
tings closely and to analyse, through a possible confrontation with the the=
ories of well-known theoreticians, the way in which they illuminate, reprod=
uce, contradict or renew the contemporary discourse on fiction, poetry, dra=
ma or other art forms like architecture, the cinema, music, etc.

Paper proposals of about 300 words to be sent by the end of July to Christi=
ne Reynier (christine.reynier_at_univ-montp3.fr).
